Incubator

(Photo taken by Dr. David A. Smith, M.D.)

This a picture of a real 24-week premature baby inside an incubator. The baby is actually a boy, hence the blue hat. His name is Decklin and he weighs 740g
(2# 0.6oz) in this picture. He had Stage III necrotizing enterocolitis just like Allie.

(Concept art by Dr. David A. Smith, M.D.)

The concept for this picture was to show a baby with tubes and wires going in all directions inside an incubator. We wanted to show inside the plastic box to give the reader a visual sense of how isolated Allie was from Julie and vise-versa. Babies at this stage of development are gangly. They are all arms and legs. This picture of Decklin shows just that.
